If you've played any amount of golf then you already know that trying to increase the distance in your golf driver swing doesn't get you any more distance, if anything it probably causes a golf swing slice and decreases your distance. Why is that? When you swing harder at a base ball it goes further, or a slap shot with a is hockey stick?
The basic golf swing doesn't have so much to do with muscling your way through the swing as it does about correct technique and club selection (if you're a beginner you might want to start here with Golf Clubs for beginners). If you can master the finer points of the basic golf swing such as: the proper golf swing stance, the perfect golf grip, and simple golf swing thoughts then you'll be far further ahead then someone trying power their way through every swing.
The basic golf swing really boils down to only a few key points. That you can see in this video below:
Note how the instructor talks about the basic swing being from mid down swing to mid follow through. This really is very true. The goal of any golf swing is to bring that club face square with the ball so that it flys away with maximum distance and in the correct direction. So if that's all there is to the basic golf swing why do we hear so much about weight shift, keeping your head down, and all the other tips floating around online? Simple, all of those points are what it takes to ensure the club face does hit the ball correctly.
First off, let me burst a little bubble that people seem to have. There are no secrets to the basic golf swing. There's technique, tips, and trouble shooting but no silver bullet. I just wanted to get that out of the way. Some people do a few parts of the swing wonderful, while others just can't piece any of it together. The only sure fix for golf swing problems is to locate the cause of the error and correct it.
Unfortunately I cannot get into a complete golf swing tutorial in this article, as it has taken many people complete books to cover such a topic. How ever I do want to talk about a couple of points that are important to the full swing. The first is the importance of flexibility, and the second is what are your options for learning the basics of the golf swing.
Exercising with golf in mind is something that is often over looked. The basic golf swing is more about physics and the awkward movements required to hit the ball far and straight. Strange enough in order to do these movements well it's important that you have the strength in the right muscles, and they are stretched and limber enough to perform. This might seem like crazy talk, but there is a complete industry built around golf exercise and flexibility training.
If you find you ache after a round of golf, or you are lacking strength to hit the ball as far as you'd like, and by strength I mean muscle strength combined with control not just brute force, then you might want to consider some golf flexibility training. Stretching for golf should be a regular part of your warm up routine before a round, but there are golf flexibility exercises that can be done off the course to help increase your golf driving distance, and score.
Ok so we've established the important of physical fitness to be able to play at the top of your game. How ever fitness alone won't do it, it also takes technique and an understanding of these awkward moves we make during the golf swing.
The perfect way to learn all there is to know about the basic golf swing is to sign up for some private lessons. Although this can end up costing more then a few bucks, and not everyone has the time for this. My personal saving grace for lowering my scores has been a mix of golf strength and flexibility training combined with quality golf video instruction. I found that reading tips on the Internet wasn't giving me a clear enough picture of what I was supposed to be doing, so I searched for more. What I found out was that I wasn't alone in this. There were numerous people in forums, and on the courses that were looking for the same thing.
What I was looking for was already out there, a catalog of golf instruction videos that covered the basic golf swing and every point of the game in between from putting to bunker play.
